Funny thing is, she couldn’t even utter the words to me.

I remember clearly when my sister-in-law let me know my mom was so proud of me. I think my reaction was, “shut the hell up.” Delivered in a sarcastic tone of yeah right, don’t even try to convince me of that. Although it turns out she was serious. But there isn’t an ounce in my body that believed her which is a testament to the relationship I have with my mom.

I’ve recently learned this type of behavior from my mom is a sign of covert narcissism.

Let’s take…

Yep, that’s right…I said mindset to improve your gut health.

Photo by Emma Simpson on Unsplash

It’s hard to imagine but seventy percent of your immune system is located in your gut. Therefore, if your gut is unhealthy, your entire body will be out of whack. If your gut is healthy, your immune system will be unstoppable.

Given the pandemic we’re trying to fight our way out of right now, a healthy immune system is the ultimate goal, right?

The good news is that your body can easily regenerate and heal itself when supported with the right foods and the right mindset. That’s right…I said mindset.

Mindset is easily discounted by many but it’s an incredibly…

Head’s up, pelvic physical therapy is done internally.

Pelvic Physical Therapy is something I only recently learned about but I believe it has the potential to change my quality of life.

For years I’ve been telling my doctors about the stress urinary incontinence that began in my early teens. Fast forward through three vaginal births and to say the problem has gotten worse is a gross understatement.

I’ve felt broken down there for a very long time.

The first traumatic experience was in high school, I was on the tennis team and we had to run laps around the indoor basketball court. I asked to use the bathroom…

My kids will do too much gaming and snacking while my remote work rolls on

It’s the last day of school for my kiddos and my oldest has his last day of elementary school. I’ll be honest, this is a time of mixed emotions for me. Not because my precious babies are getting older but because my college coursework doesn’t stop and now I will have three rowdy boys home with me while I try to get it all done.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m looking forward to not having the alarm go off at 5:30 am. I like to get up and enjoy a cup of coffee before I need to cook breakfast for…

I think I got distracted by social media shiny objects.

I like to think I’m kind of on top of trends. I may not be partaking in them but I certainly know of them. So how did Medium fly completely under my radar for so long?

Launching a business is not for the faint of heart

A few years back I launched a holistic wellness business aimed at helping military spouses improve their health in a lifestyle that puts them dead last on the list. It is definitely a micro-niche. I’ve had many business coaches that tried to sway me to expand my niche but I always pushed back because…

Movement, breathwork, and visualization come together for a transformational experience.

Picture from Kinrgy’s Instagram feed

“Movement to connect with your physical body, Breathwork to stimulate your brain and nervous system, and activating your Imagination to create possibility and inspire you to make your dreams a reality.” — Kinrgy

Kinrgy is a workout developed by Dancing with the Stars alum and prominent choreographer, Julianne Hough. Clearly, Julianne understands the power of a dance routine, she began dancing professionally at nine years old.

Kinrgy was just what my life needed when I discovered it. It was a mental release I craved and the movement I’d been lacking…

I admit I found myself in it.

I’ve been a member of a special group for many years now. It’s really a secret society if you will.

So secret, in fact, we don’t even know who the other members are. There’s a lot of women in there though. Many are military spouses but not all of them.

Sometimes we recognize each other, but we don’t let the other person know we see them. There’s too much shame involved.

Other times the members accidentally let their armor down. You can tell they’re one of us by the look in their eyes. …

Here’s what we are looking for and we can’t wait to meet you!

Here at The Authentic Life we are looking to connect by sharing stories others may think are shameful.

Stories others may be embarrassed to open up about.

They may feel it reveals too much. But they couldn’t be more off base.

I have witnessed the power of owning the hard stuff to talk about. It is incredibly relatable and most importantly it helps others when you do it. Plus, it’s pretty damn cathartic for yourself!

Here’s What I’m Looking For

The Authentic Life is a publication about owning the messy parts of…

And I can’t imagine not talking to my cats for that long.

It’s supposed to be life-changing, these silent meditations. Sounds a bit like torture to me.

I suppose that’s what people have felt when I’ve done juice fasting. Head’s up…juice fasting is torture.

I think about food a lot. Constantly, actually. So to only consume fresh juices is really flipping hard. I come out the other side feeling amazing though so it’s worth the struggle.

Maybe that’s what a silent meditation is like.

It’s vocal fasting.

Plus, a whole lot more I’m sure. …

And how the cycle stops now, for my children.

Lately, I’ve done a lot of writing and reflecting about incidences of emotional abuse throughout my childhood and marriage, we’ve been together for 17 years.

I’ll be honest in that I only started calling it emotional abuse in the last year. I’m 46 and it goes way back. Most times I wanna call it something else to make others feel more comfortable. Me, I’m one of the others.

I’ve noticed I’ve done this a lot over my lifetime. Bending to make others more comfortable.

This reflection has illuminated patterns that were never connected before. It’s so much harder to relive…
